The first day was insane, Mr. Escalante was unable to gain any control of the class and at that point I believe he faces the reality of the situation he is in, a premature bell brings a greater disruption but even with the rowdy class he still maintains a quiet disposition. This is to me a sign of a patient teacher.
He chose to use what he had to engage the class he came with a knife , apron and apples to teach them math. Very creative, that effort with his comedic way assisted him in gaining their attention.
When the gang member entered class and tried to intimidate him I enjoyed the fact that he stood strong and demonstrated to his class that there was no need to fear them. But mainly that he was in charge not them.
Some skill's that stood out to me was his ability to engage the class
Bad skill's that stood out was that the lady administrator by her own example demonstrated that she had nio faith in their ability and that they were destined to fail. She called them illiterates.
Mr. Escalante in spite of their lack of discipline pushed them to excel. and instilled confidence through his teaching.

What makes for good teaching?
In accordance with a program I was fortunate enough to be a part of called "Treasure Hunters" Their entire program is based on every child is able to learn. They call them selves treasure hunters because their goal is to find the treasure in each child. They speak into the lives of the children they teach. they set their classroom as an environment conducive to healthy learning. By using positive input and encouragement. they treat each child as an individual that is capable of success.
I think that teachers should focus on the children's natural ability and work from there. Covering all areas of academic learning in all areas. Learning what ways the children learn and using that information to cater to the needs of the child.
I am of the personal opinion that good teaching includes caring , personal interaction. A belief that the one being taught is capable of learning, and being able to adjust to that students learning style to assist them in there achievement.

Realization of the Journey; Final draft on what I have learned.
There are three persons who made a significant impact in my learning process. By their example, they assured me that I can and will make it in my academic journey. I hope to share with you those things they imparted to me, which has assisted me in maintaining my zeal to complete the process.
Having been given the task of sharing something that I have learned, I was reeled back to the beginning of my academic process as a college student. You see, I returned to school 30 years after dropping out of high school and receiving a GED. The motivation to return to school all began when I experienced two strokes and two heart attacks. My condition forced me to stop working and pressed me into a system that is not kind to those who are less fortunate. While at an appointment one day , I took notice of the ill treatment of a client that was not familiar with the English language. Frustrated by the way this woman was being handled, I enquired of the receptionist how one would become an advocate for the clients.
Needless to say, she was not very happy that I had asked. In fact she really took it as a personal insult and responded with a very nasty tone and said, "well!! You have to get a degree in Human Services!! Needless to say her tone was one that said I couldn't do it, and that was all it took for me to get off my butt and register. 6 months later I was a student and on my way. Unfortunately, I hadn't really counted the cost or set a good plan in motion. That first year was a blind leap of faith, the information I was given by a counselor, (whom I later found out was not a counselor at all), sent me down the entirely wrong path. This caused me to waist a good deal of time on classes I really didn't need. Fortunately I did have excellent professors, who assisted me in getting connected with the advisor I needed. Dr. M. Cohen, she is the administrator over the Human services department. Through her guidance I was connected with Professors that Have literally changed my life. Not just because of the information they have imparted, but mainly because of their genuine concern for the success of their students. Even more amazing was their willingness to be transparent.
I realized early, that college unlike high school is a "your on your own " environment. I mean , very few of the professors are tolerant of your struggle with learning. No matter what the reason. Please note; the statement does not apply to all, just those that I personally encountered. As I stated earlier I was very fortunate. There are two teachers, and one student who made a significant impact in my learning process. By their example they assured me that I can and will make it. I hope to share with you those things they imparted to me, which has assisted me in maintaining my zeal to complete the process of education.
An over view of my life says that I should not be where I am. Having been emotionally, and physically abused as well as mentally damaged by others and their madness. It is truly my opinion that my life is a miracle. The medical challenges have been my greatest test because of the extent of the side effects I wrestled with, and at times still do. After having the first stroke and heart attack, I had basically all of my mental capacity as well as physical strength. But when the second hit me it was like night and day. In the beginning I would be afraid to leave home, because once away from the familiar I would be lost. I can remember going out to Wal-Mart one day, and halfway down the road I drew a blank. I had no idea where I had come from or where I was headed. I have never experienced a fear like that since, and really I hope I never do. I can remember sitting on the side of the road crying and praying that I would recall the lost moments.
In my first year of school, I jumped right into 15 credits. What was I thinking after 30 years of not attending any classes? It turned out to be a successful quarter to my surprise. I was amazed that God had given me the ability to learn the material that was required. Naturally coming back to school with out a real plan, to say the least was like a set up for my failure, but as I stated earlier, the right people have been a part of this amazing journey.
The first I would like to talk about Is Ms. Irene Bittrick. Before teaching she had her own practice. This woman that is very passionate in the area of abuse of children/youth/Adults and seniors. Her impact in my life was profound because she challenged what I thought I knew. she assisted me in obtaining the proper evidence based information, to substantiate the opinions I had. She skillfully inspired me to process information before disregarding it. She would just dialog with us. She engaged us in a way that, provoked thought and intent. She didn't just speak at us; she spoke to us and with us. She encouraged personal input and clarified it when she prompted us to evaluate our particular field of study. She warned us of the impending dangers of personalizing and learning the important skill of separating the issues, realizing that it is not about us but the wellness of the client. One of my favorite courses that I took from her was Suicide intervention and prevention. A class that taught us how to catch people at the point that hope is almost gone and help them to achieve their healthy place. Something about the idea of encouraging another gave me great satisfaction as well as zeal to learn all I could about the topic. Ms. Irene seemed to know just how to keep me engaged when at times the entire class was moaning because of the style she taught in. While they could not understand handouts that she read through while giving her presentations, I was elated; the repetition gave me the chance to really get it. Somewhere in the process my brain began to heal and restore itself. I actually got a 3+GPA and was on the presidents list a couple of quarters. It could have been because I took ceramics along with tough courses to buffer the experience. Sociology and Psychology, just to name a couple had my mind reeling.
Then there was Mr. Chris Swift. This is my hero. He was transparent with his inabilities and that inspired me.. He told us about his life's experiences as an ex addict and disclosed his struggle as a dyslectic; he also shared stories of his dysfunctional family life. My entrance test had placed me into a 3rd year college student language skills level. While all the other areas were at a 8th-9th grade levels. I still can not figure that out. Chris gave me a term that changed my life in academic learning. He calls it "The Journey". His principle way of teaching was simply to put emphasis on the personal application of what he imparted. It was our story, personal and clear. He did not like us to respond with what we thought he wanted to hear, but rather what was on our minds. Our opinions and feelings mattered, and our personal input was important.
In Mr. Swifts class my greatest part of the experience, was that of writing papers and doing research on my areas of interest. It enabled me to grow personally. It was an opportunity for me to be supplied with the language that would finally support and explain those things that were a part of my daily applications to life. Those things I could explain but I knew. This was a strange position to be in, to know what you are saying, but not be able to explain it. Awkward to say the least, considering we are a part of a fact driven society.
The final person that I would like to speak about with the highest regard of respect would be my fellow student, Mr. G. L. His life is a living example of a success story. He came from being strung out on drugs, living in the woods. Not caring about anything but the next high. His family had disowned him and from his story he shared with us, even his friends had abandoned him. Yet somewhere in the mess God touched his life and transformed a broken man into a thriving successful student. He maintained consistent study habits and high grades. This was not without struggle. I was fortunate to be there during his journey. We were children in the same neighborhood while growing up. The drama I knew , he knew. The community confusion and dysfunctional family life was shared experience. Church life was shared on all the levels that one could share it. The fact that He turned it all around is the motivation to continue in this journey, He is now at Washington State University furthering his academic career.
These people all have many things in common with me and because of that I was catapulted into a world of academia that I never believed I could achieve. The one most Important however is that they each had their own challenge but overcame them and are successfully accomplishing their goals. They helped me to see that no matter what my challenges I can complete and accomplish anything I put my mind to. There is nothing too hard to achieve. I have learned that no matter what people say in terms of what I can or can not do: the true outcome is totally up to me and what I am willing to work for. It just requires me to press forward when it is not easy, and have confidence in the ability that God gives me to achieve excellence in my life. I have also learned that bad situations have only the power that I give them in my life. I have intelligent choice, and I choose to succeed.

Me, a combination of Reflections unexpected reaction
It was like a light that came on. I realised that all of the readings had the one thing common. Each person did what they had to do to fulfill their need to succeed n the area of their interest. Which for me is life changing. See for me I was so concerned about what every body else wanted or needed that I took no time for myself. To learn who it was i was made to be. You might be saying what does that have to do with anything? well. a very wise young man demonstrated a certain level of transparency that really lit something within me. i realized that every thing; directly or in directly effects the outcome of another circumstance some how. there is a bigger picture.

The question comes to mind. Why is at 55 years of age, I am just now getting a clue. what was it that affected the building of this person I admire now when I look in the mirror. At one point broken, but now just healed. Finally able to see some good, no one to blame just the life God chose for me. That He might get the greater glory. Yes I am a Believer in every way the word states. Not perfect just forgiven. I am a faith Walker. i trust God for The Impossible and He has shown me some things because of it. I listen to all sorts of statements that I don't respond to, simply because what i believe is based on what i myself have experienced..Believe me when I say amazing grace is all it has been. That is my faith. My life however is a different reflection of would be facts if it were not for my Faith. Born to Gilbert and Jeanie Roberts, and raised in my pre-teens to teen years by Jeanie and Jarvis Hawkins, and the love of my life My grandmother Emma Thomas who raised me in my earlier years. Still i say Thank you. Having been raped by a babysitter at the tender age of 5 she took me in to a safe place her home, or so i had thought. So from Denver to Bremerton I was moved. My Grandmother was my covering. i was treated badly by my cousins and my teen Uncles and Aunt were rather cruel as well. i can remember them chasing me with a Pigs head calling me names and daring me to tell my grandmother. it wasn't my fault she protected me she new my story.
The tragedy of incest is real, you know when relatives take advantage of younger cousins doing things that should not be. Before the time that Pedophiles were even acknowledged. Why did they keep it a secret I wonder.Keeping that secret only caused more Harm. So many left their children with them for a night out on the town. Not Neglect, just misplaced trust. No One to blame just was what it was, a tragedy. Another opportunity to push a young lady deeper into that dark place were validation is found in sexual promiscuity. Yet no one ever inquires why. scattered ugly memories from age 5 to about age 11. mama and daddy moved back to Washington onto my Grandfathers property in one of the three houses he built. So I had to move next door with them. thankful grama was in range.
I think from a young age I began doing what ever I could to please others. if they were in a good place somehow my world was OK. my years in Jr high school; hm mm, well it wasn't the football team but we can say I was busy. High school I got into sports thinking it would distract my behavior but sad to say it was no better. I started smoking cigarettes and pot in my first year of high school formerly. Really it began much earlier because my mom smoked and I would sneak her cigarettes and her roaches( left over joints) she would forget to stash away.
By the end of my 10th grade year i was a pot head and every ones girl. In a Military town it wasn't hard to find whatever you needed. My mom attended school in Bellingham and was gone through the quarters she was in school. My dad had a juke joint in the shack in the back and that's were he spent most of His time playing Poker. Needless to say no supervision led to transition..I didn't graduate with my class and I ended up getting pregnant. The father wanted nothing to do with me i think he may have been married. Another fella had a crush on me and threatened to kill his self if he couldn't have me, the guy was a hopeless alcoholic and yes, I married him couldn't stand the idea of his death on my conscience. Went to Oceanside Ca. and left Him 6 months later. To this day I don't know where he is at. The last I heard someone had shot his eye out, he survived and now has a glass eye.
While I was still pregnant . I met my daughters father. We lived together until I gave birth to my son Jarvis and then I moved back home with my mom. She was consumed with her first Grandson. When Jarvis was 9 months I was invited for a visit and came back pregnant. Crystals father didn't know about her until she was 5. He was a violent man and I felt that if I told him i would be trapped with him.
Jarvis and Crystal were 18 months a part so that was a challenge but I did what I had to do, I did work two jobs, but it was fast food and the pay stunk. I moved to a place on 5th street when Jarvis and Crystal were 3 and 4. My life had spiraled into behavior that should have brought death, but to this day i believe God had a Devinne plan in the midst of my mess. again this is really just reflections that provoked an unexpected reaction. The reaction of having to walk myself through this thing called my life in Amazement of the many things that God has done
Emotionally , mentally even physically scared but here and now standing strong and pressing forward. I have not arrived but I am most certainly Moving forward. Like Rose I floated thru life just doing enough, but then like Malcolm I became so hungry for what I didn't have I started fervently seeking after it, and then as all have stated; doing it my way , which in my plan is God's way..
A random thought moment
My realization of the Journey-rough draft
Having been given the task of sharing something that I have learned , reeled me to my beginning of my academic process as a college student . I returned to school 30 years after dropping out of high school and receiving a GED. The motivation to return to school all began when I experienced two strokes and two heart attacks. My condition forced me to stop working and pressed me into a system that is not kind to those less fortunate. While at a Doctors appointment one day I took notice of the ill treatment of a client that was not familiar with the English language. Frustrated by the way this woman was being handled, I enquired of the receptionist how one would become an advocate for the clients.
Needless to say, she was not very happy I had asked. She really took it as a personal insult and responded with a very nasty tone and said "well, You have to get a degree in Human services!!
Needless to say her tone was one that said I couldn't do it, and that was all it took for me to get off my butt and register. 6 months later I was a student and on my way. But I hadn't really counted the cost or set a good plan in motion. That first year was a blind leap of faith, the information I was given by a councilor, (whom I later found out was a student and not a councilor at all). Sent me down the entirely wrong path, which caused me to waist a good deal of time on classes I did not need. Fortunately I did have excellent Professors, who assisted me in getting connected with the Advisor I needed. Dr. Muriel Cohen, She is the administrator over the Human services department. Through her guidance I was connected with Professors that have literally changed my life. Not just because of the information they have imparted, but mainly because of their genuine concern for the success of their students. Even more amazing was their willingness to be transparent.
I realized early that College unlike high school is a "you are on your own" environment. I mean, very few of the professors are tolerant of your struggle with learning. No matter what the reason it seems. the statement does not apply to all , just those that I personally encountered. As I stated earlier I was very fortunate. There are three teachers who made a significant impact in my learning process. by their example the assured me that I can and will make it. I hope to share with you those things they imparted to me assisting me in maintaining my zeal to complete the process.
An overview of my life says that I should not be were I am doing what i am doing. emotionally , and physically abused, mentally damaged by others and their madness. It is truly my opinion that my life is a miracle. The medical challenges have been my greatest because of the extent of the effects that came from them. After having The first stroke and Heart attack, I had basically all my mental capacity as well as physical strength. But when the second hit me it was like night and day. In the beginning I would be afraid to leave home, because once away from the familiar I would be lost. I can remember going out to walmart one day, and halfway down the road I drew a blank. I had no idea were I had come from or were I was headed. I have never experienced a fear like that since , and really i never hope to ever again. I can remember sitting on the side of the road crying and praying that I would recall the lost moments.
So naturally coming back to school without a real plan, to say the least was like a set up for my failure , but as i stated the right people have been a part of this amazing journey. The first that I would like to talk about, is Ms. Irene Bittrick. A professor that at one point had her own practice. A woman that is very passionate in the area of abuse of children /youth/Adults and Seniors. Her Impact in my life was one of true compassion of the field it self. She would just dialog with us, she engaged us in a way that, provoked thought and intent. She made us evaluate the reasons why we wanted to do this specific field of study. She warned us of the impending dangers of personalizing and learning the important skill of separating the issues, realizing that it is not about us but the wellness of the client. One of my favorite course that I had with her was Suicide intervention and prevention, catching people at the point that hope is almost gone and helping them achieve their healthy place. Something about the idea of encouraging another gave me great satisfaction as well as a zeal to learn all I could. Ms Irene seemed to know just how to keep me engaged when at time the entire class was moaning because of the style she taught in.
while they could not understand handouts and then over views of the handouts, i was elated the repetition gave me the chance to really get it..Somewhere in the process My brain began to heal and restore itself. I actually got a 3+ GPA and was on the presidents list a couple of quarters. could have been because I took ceramics along with the tough courses to buffer the experience. Sociology, Phsycology, just to name a couple had my mind reeling.
Then there was Mr Chris Swift. This is my hero. He was transparent with his inabilities and that inspired me. He told us He was dyslectic, and also an ex addict. Challenged in every aspect of his life. Dysfunctional family life and the rest following. Chris gave me a term that changed my life in academic learning. "The Journey". His principle way of teaching was simply to put emphasis on the personal application of what he imparted. It was our story, personal and clear. He did not like us to respond with what we thought he wanted to hear , but rather what was on our minds. Our opinion mattered, and our input was important and mattered.
One of my fellow students was also a very important part to me learning experience. He had a story that was amazing. His life was one of drugs, sleeping in the woods and not caring about anything but the next high. His name is unimportant. The fact that He turned it all around was the motivator. He is now at Washington state University furthering his academic career.
Needless to say, she was not very happy I had asked. She really took it as a personal insult and responded with a very nasty tone and said "well, You have to get a degree in Human services!!

These people all have one thing in common with me and because of that I was catapulted into a world of academia that i never believed I could achieve. They each had their own challenge but overcame them and are successfully accomplishing there goals. they helped me to see that no matter what my challenges i can complete anything I put my mind to. There is nothing too hard to achieve. I learned that no matter what people say in terms of what we can or can not do the true out come is totally up to the Me. It just requires me to press forward when it is not easy, and have confidence in the ability that God gives me to achieve excellence in my life. I have also learned that bad situations have only the power that i give them in my life. i have intelligent choice, and I choose to succeed.

How are Malcom X's and Mike Rose's essays different or similar?
Malcom X highlights his years in prison, which is where he taught himself to read. He daily sought out definitions in the dictionary, carefully writing down each word in his note book. He stated that he baegan this task because he was tired of not being able to express what he wanted to convey in letters that he wrote. He was gifted in the area of articulation and could captivate crouds while giving his messages, but trying to write simple English, he stated that he not only was not articulate, He wasn't even functional.
Mike Rose however was a bright student and fell upon his circumstances due to error within the school system. So because of the undisciplined setting he was in. he developed very undisciplined habits. So his lack was not based on the fact that he couldn't, but rather the fact that he just didn't try very hard. He just did enough to get by.
Malcolm eluded to the fact that he was provoked to do well by those that were around Him one example was a person named Bimbi. He was envious of his knowledge and how he was able to take charge of every conversation.
Mike rose was surrounded by individuals who were not even expected to excel, in fact that seemed already destined to fail based upon the category they were placed in which was called a euphemism for the bottom level.
In answer to the question I would say that in certain things the stories are similar, but in essence they come from two very different perspectives

Pre Writing I have used
When I have been required to write papers, the first thing I do is reflect on things I know about. Most of my writing has come from my person experiences in diverse situations. I journal to gather my thoughts as they come to my mind. after a few days I will go back over my journal and organize my thoughts. Most of the time my drafting starts at that point and the number of drafts depend on the particular thought.
I allow a couple of people to read over my notes to see if it makes sense to anyone else besides me. I believe that I can think something is clear but when reviewed by someone else I find out that it was not. After that I then proceed to develop my paper. To be honest I just write what I feel and pray it works. I would really like to be able to say that the steps that I have read about are things I always apply , but I would not be telling the truth. I am in this class to learn that

Daily Pressing My way Through this
week 1 & 2 a total disaster
To say that I am perplexed would be a mild statement at this point...I have spent two weeks building a blog. The reality is that I actually have set up three blogs, none of which have I been able to access. To most the task of building a blog is easy. For me however it is as if the world has imploded upon me. I barely made it through a computer course during the summer, then to my surprise the first assignment has to do with the computer. I am experiencing so much stress it has made me sick. and that is not good because as long as I miss class I only fall farther behind. just going to try and rest. next week will be better, I will get it done
week 3 Tuesday's class
VICTORY!!! I have established my blog still cant figure it completely out but at least I am closer to the goal. I really thank my class mate for helping me as well as my teacher who took time after class. home now and of course nothing is working rite.
week 3 Thursday
Well, now I really feel a bit ignorant. I have been totally frustrated because I could not figure out how to blog and didn't realize that after pulling up my page I had to log in....Oh Boy!!!! totally missed that one. after having two strokes and two heart attacks, I find myself a bit challenged at times with small tasks of thinking thru a situation or even following the easiest of instructions. If I become emotional it is absolutely certain I will remain stuck. So continuing to remain calm and focused is the goal and I will be successful. Failure is not an option...

1rst assignment ; How can I use the readings as possible models for my first paper?
Feross Aboukhadiejeh mastered his skill programming computers, by simply repeating the task of making them. His own personal hands on work was the thing that perfected his ability, and his sites. in terms of my own paper I don't know how this would apply. however; the way that he laid out his paper was very interesting to me. I enjoyed the added photos that broke up what could have been monotonous reading for me. In reference to Joshua J. Romero's "How I learned to live Google free. I have to be honest and say I reading it was a chore. and after finishing, I don't think there is anything that I would use from it. But from the sources Google offers I would utilize all of the tools it lends. Based on his information, it is clear that anything I need to know I can find thru Google. Dictionary sources, background information, even information on people and things I may eventually write about
